Services we provide
Services we provide include:
- exercise programmes/prescription
- joint mobilisation
- manipulation
- lifestyle advice
- education on injury prevention
- acupuncture
- soft tissue mobilisation
- group rehabilitation classes
- hydrotherapy (Taranaki Base Hospital)
- splinting
- hand wound care and dressings
- assessment and eligibility for specialised equipment.
Hand therapy
Hand therapy is carried out by specialist physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
Hand therapy conditions treated include:
- acute trauma – tendon and nerve repairs, fractures and crush injuries
- soft tissue injuries – wrist, thumb and finger sprains
- tendon issues – tennis and golfer's elbow
- neuropathy – carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome
- rehabilitation – after elective surgery
- scar management – after surgery and burns
- arthritis – osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Your appointment
Allow 30 minutes for your appointment. Your physiotherapist will take a thorough medical history, assess your needs and discuss your goals for treatment.
Prepare for your appointment by:
- wearing comfortable and appropriate clothing
- bringing important information with you, such as x-rays, medication lists, reading glasses
- letting us know if you have any cultural needs.
We will be happy to answer any of your questions.
Treatment cost
There is no charge for physiotherapy at Taranaki Base Hospital or Hawera Hospital.
Treatment is either funded by ACC or Taranaki DHB depending on your condition. Some cost may be involved if you wish to purchase specialised equipment such as orthotics
Referral information
You will need a referral to access the physiotherapy service.
ACC
If your injury is covered by ACC, you will need to meet one or both of the following.
- a Community Service Card holder
- have a referral from a consultant or specialist.
We accept referrals for hand therapy, pain programmes, activity programmes and serious injury clients.
Non-ACC referrals
If you do not have an ACC referral, you will need to be referred by your healthcare provider.
